Pete Newell

September 21, 1964 - July 9, 2018

Pete was the youngest of nine children always jesting that his parents had to keep going until they got it right; the “jewel of the Newells.”  Born in Detroit, Michigan where he spent his early years until the family moved to New Mexico.  Pete loved the mountains.  He was passionate about the great outdoors, travel and adventure.  He loved reading all sorts of books on history and was a life-long learner.  He never met a stranger.  His keen powers of perception, analytical abilities, and ability relate to all walks of life along with his superior intellect made him a strong asset in any organization he worked for.  He could sit across from a bank’s President or Board of Directors delivering hard news and somehow still have them thank him in the end.  He spent eight years of his professional life working for the L.A. County Auditor-Controller’s Special Investigation Unit and most recently worked as a National Bank Examiner for the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, U.S. Treasury Department.

Pete met his wife, Vibeke, in 1993.  They married in 1999.  Together they had many adventures traveling, visiting family across the country and in Europe.  Pete became an avid skier upon moving to Colorado in 2008 and looked forward to the annual Newell ski week.  He loved his mountain home with Vibeke and their dog, Spootz, calling it “heaven on earth.”  Pete, Vibeke and Spootz spent many weekends hiking and enjoying their natural surroundings.

Those who knew Pete would frequently comment that “everybody loves Pete” and this is true.  He was approachable, friendly and a man of integrity.  You could count on Pete.  He had a zest for life and all its mysteries.  He was an amazing husband, brother, brother -in-law, son-in-law, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend.  He is survived by his wife, Vibeke, and siblings; Joan, Frank, Bill, Dorothy, Kathy, John and Fred; along with many nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, cousins and in laws – all of whom loved Pete very much.

Pete, you will be so missed.  We love you.

Pete examined the bank I worked for. The bank ultimately shut down. He was a mentor to me and I had the utmost respect for him. He was different than most examiners. He had a tremendous amount of integrity. I had been trying to reach out to him and just learned of his passing from another colleague. My prayers are with your family. He was truly an inspiration to me. I will miss him.

Pete was named after my dad, and I know my dad was proud of him. He was always warm and welcoming when we made it out to Colorado, and we enjoyed his visits to Michigan — everyone truly was his friend. This picture of Pete wearing his Michigan shirt made me smile. Pete will be greatly missed.
