Roy Daniel Monk, age 91, of Evergreen CO, went to heaven on November 7, 2024. Roy passed peacefully in hospice care in Evergreen on a beautiful snowy morning. His wife of 68 years and two daughters were at his side during his brief illness.
Roy was born and grew up on a farm and ranch in the Texas panhandle. He graduated from Quitaque High School and attended Texas Tech University before entering the U.S. Army in 1953. After discharge from the Army, Roy returned to the family farm and, shortly after, proposed to his sweetheart, Alma Reed. The couple married on New Year's Day in 1956 at First Baptist Church in Quitaque and moved to their new home: Lubbock, TX.
While living in Lubbock, Roy and Alma were blessed with two daughters, Roycee and Roxanna. From Lubbock, there were multiple moves for oil and gas jobs in Midland and Dell City, TX and also Guymon, OK.
In 1969, the family moved to Uvalde, TX where Roy returned to his agricultural roots, working in farm equipment sales and management. Over the years, Roy built strong relationships all over the area and mentored young farmers. He was known by friends as a prankster who gave as good as he got.
Upon retirement, Roy and Alma traveled throughout the U.S. and Canada in their motorhome. They volunteered in state and national parks as well as Christian conference centers and campgrounds. His favorite place was Maggie Valley, NC.
After the RV years, they settled in Athens, TX and were members of First Baptist Church and regular volunteers at the food pantry. In 2015, they moved closer to family in Wimberley, TX and finally, in 2023, to Evergreen, CO.
Family meant everything to Roy. You could find him most evenings playing board games or dominoes with family. He is survived by his wife, Alma Reed Monk, and his daughters, Roycee Kerr (Kevin) and Roxanna Guyton (Rick). Known as ‘Daddy Monk,’ Roy was loved by his grandchildren, Kason Kerr (Sarah), Kolby Kerr (Emily), Kassidy Birdsong (Derek), and Kimberly Chernosky (Matt); and his great grandchildren, Kyndall, Beckett, Samuel, Kirby, Dawson, Cecilia, Kaleb, and Graham. Roy is preceded in death by his parents, Ace and Annie Monk, and two brothers, L.B. and Curtis Monk.
Roy Monk’s ashes will be interred at the Dallas-Ft. Worth National Cemetery on November 27, 2024, in a small family ceremony. On January 4, 2025, at 2:00pm, family and friends will celebrate Roy’s life at the FiberMax Center for Discovery (Tractor Museum) in Lubbock, TX.
The family asks in lieu of flowers, donations be made to your local food bank or hospice organization.
