Joyce Tibble Downes, “Joy”, passed away peacefully at her home in Evergreen, Colorado on February 3, 2018. Joy was born on September 30, 1921 in Surbiton, Kingston, England, to the late Ethel Southgate and the late William Tibble. Joy graduated from Tolworth Girls High School and became a dancer and actress (under the stage name of Joy Lester) before, during and after World War II. She traveled extensively across England and the United States during and after the war. She met the love of her life, a young US Navy Officer, Melvin R Downes, on New Year’s Eve of 1943 after performing in Southampton. They continued their relationship and were married in 1948. A military family, they lived in many places, primarily settling in Middletown, Rhode Island; Boonton/Parsippany, New Jersey and after her husband died, Joy lived the remainder of her life in Evergreen, Colorado. She is survived by her sons, William and his wife Kay, Christopher K, and Melvin R Jr and his wife Connie; daughter, Joanne R and her husband Arthur, and daughter, Judith A; and grandchildren, Nathanial (Ned), Ian, Samantha, Chris, Christina, Melissa, and Alex and 4 great grandchildren. She was a member of the Episcopal Church and lived a wonderful life with many, many friends. In lieu of flowers, Donations may be made in Joy’s name to the American Heart Association and/or the Church of the Transfiguration Evergreen.
