Berniel Henry “Bud” Zabel was born on July 3, 1937 in Smith Center, Kansas to Emil Henry Zabel and Ruby Jewel (Bales) Zabel. Bud was the third of four children, brother to Maudeen Zabel (Wright), Curtis Zabel, & Marsha Zabel (White.) In 1937 he moved with his family to Colorado where they took up residence in the beautiful Yampa Valley. Bud attended the Pleasant View Primary School and Hayden Union High School, graduating in 1955. On November 15, 1958 Bud married the love of his life, Carron Ingred Pierce. From this union Patrick Allen Zabel, Teresa Diane Zabel (Sidwell) and Troy Deon Zabel were born. Bud spent his career operating heavy equipment starting with road development and management. In 1963 he went to work for the Peabody Coal Company, retiring after 33 years of service in 1996. Throughout Bud’s life he enjoyed his many animals, from the time he was young with his ducks, his walks around town with Max and Morgan, to his latest “best friend” Gidget. He spent his life enjoying fishing, gardening, cooking (eating), napping, and telling stories to anyone including the man on the street. Bud’s deepest love however, was to love and serve his family. Bud is survived by his life, 2 sisters, a brother, his 3 children, 8 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life and pot luck “Bud and Carron style” will be hosted on Saturday June 3rd beginning at 1 pm, extending to 4 pm. This celebration will be held @ The Haven, 302 S. Shelton Street in Hayden. Bring your favorite dish and stories. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the charity of your choice.
